THE ROAD TRAVELLED BY...

It was a mild, cold day when we traveled for hours to reached our destination. A tiring thing to do, you would guess, sitting for hours in the car, doing nothing but sleeping and talking with the person that surrounds you. Well, it wasn't. The ride was so col, especially with a camaraderie that are so funny, who just keep on jesting with each other and with the presence of Kuya Don2x who throw jokes that makes your stomach burst. Who could ever forget those memories? Memories that would remind you of beautiful that day was. A joyful ride it was...

We were amazed of how pretty and entertaining the place was when we finally reached Bayawan City. I was surprised actually that it was a city. Every time I imagine a city I always picture out thrashes everywhere, dirty canals, informal settlers and beggars anywhere, pollution all over the city, franchisers of Mc Do, Jollibee, and fast foods I really expect would be seen every corners of the streets...but the place was so different...cleanliness is observed and pollution is minimal....people are very amazing, very approachable, very disciplined and kind....

The people is a reflection of their Mayor, maybe. Any place could never be that progressive without the hard work and commitment of the mayor to work for the better of the place. I even salute their mayor for being innovative, discovering very rare inventions like waste disposal converting it into a very useful water. Also, the discovery of Tuba2x as bio-diesel, an alternative gas for mobiles, which is used in the place right now. His works that are very unique attracts me to go back to the Bayawan and with his inquisitiveness which I really appreciate more.

It was a long ride with full of knowledge..who could never had enjoyed that trip bringing with you information and learnings to impart to people and encourage your colleagues to be like Bayawan or even do better of what Bayawan has.

Journey 101

“ A long journey starts with a single step “
August 09,2009. It was everything the group planned for “ survey in Bug.ot, Argao.” Everybody was kind’ a excited for the long way trip towards our destination. The third year students together with the interns went up to Bug.ot for the survey of the households in connection with the project proposal of the CAS team. The task was to identify the issues and concerns of the people living there. And doing the task was not that easy, we need to face the heat of the sun, the long way walk and walk to reach the other houses especially in sitio Balayong. Can you imagine the place? It’s a place situated in a mountain. But of course things doesn’t end up with those hardships. It was also a good thing to know that despite the depressed situation of the community, the people there still keep the signature of Filipino values. Being hospitable, that is when they welcome us with their warm smile, when they give us banana and guavas and they even offer us snacks. However the community is beyond hopelessness… But it’s rich surroundings and natural resources offers hope for economic improvement through the government and NGO’s help.
At last our bus arrived, the end of the long day trip. But I know that that journey should not end there. Another little step is to be taken to ease the burden of poverty. We could take the first step by starting to care for our less fortunate fellowmen.
The trip brought me to a closer look of what poverty means.

When God Created Reyn

The good lord was creating a model into his sixth day of overtime for Reyn when an angel appeared. She said, ”Lord you seem to be having a lot of trouble with this one. What’s wrong with the standard model?”

The lord replied, “Have you seen the specs on this one? She has to be completely independent, and possess the qualities of a very patient girlfriend of a cadet. She must be able to subject herself to the scrutinizing looks of his mistahs, and be able to carry on cheerfully in the absence of her boyfriend at times she needs him most. She must be willing to meet her cadet whenever and wherever he gets a chance to go out on a duty or a privilege upon sudden notice. And most of all she must willfully embrace the ideals of her chosen life without questions and with the same zeal.

The angel replied, “That’s impossible.”

The lord answered, “don’t worry, I will make other girls to help her. And I will give her an unusually strong heart so it can swell with pride in her boyfriend’s achievements, sustain the pain of separations, beat soundly when it is overworked and tired, be large to say “I understand” when she actually doesn’t and say “ I Love you” regardless of anything.”

“Lord,” said the angel, touching his arm gently, “go to bed and get some rest. You can finish this tomorrow.”

“I can’t stop now,” said the lord, “I am so close to creating something unique. Already this model heals herself when she is sick, is used to waving goodbye to her cadet from a pier or a runaway, and understand why it’s important that he leave.”

The angel circled the model of Reyn, looked at it closely and sighed, “it looks fine but it’s too soft.” “She might look soft,” said the lord. ”But she has undeniable strength. You would not believe what she can endure.” Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the lord’s creation. “There’s a leak,” she announced. “It’s a tear,” the angel continued, “What is it there for?”

The lord looked puzzled and softly said, “I did not put it there.”

CAS WEEK 09 ( DAY 1)

At one o’clock in the afternoon the first event was a seminar hosted by Mr. John Yap, page editor of Sun Star Cebu. The highlight was about the modern communication in media which Mr. Yap entitled “Crazy Little Thing Called Blog”. His introduction was asking about the person of the year in 2006 in the TIME magazine. There was only one person who was able to answer the question but with doubt because she just have read the cover. Yet she was correct! Since this generation is the time of modern technology especially in the innovation of the computer and the people has given equal opportunity to use it with importance, thus “YOU ARE THE PERSON OF THE YEAR” (TIME MAGAZINE ’06). Mr. Yap also gave us the definition of blog, its type, and the different blog sites and how to start in blogging. He said that blue theme is the best as your background because it is easier to the eyes or he called an “eye candy”. Citizen Journalism starts with a blog just like in the case of the report of King of Pop, Michael Jackson’s death. Before the media really televise it in public, they have received a message from a blog and confirmed it and have found the truth. He ended his seminar by saying, “Computer is a useful instrument and it helps us or dulce et utile (entertainment & information)”

The next activity was the live stand-up report. Cery Gamboa got the 3rd prize, Chenilyn Latoha 2nd prize, and Kristel Cordero in the 1st prize. In the Cebuano poetry writing contest, 3rd prize goes to “ASA NA” by Monaley Olandria, 2nd prize goes to “KAHOY SA AKONG PANGANDOY” by Ruth Antiposo, and the 1st prize goes to “ANG SAUNA MOBALIK PA” by Celine Dumaga. In photograph contest, Joyce Enriquez won the 3rd prize, Amy Logan 2nd prize and Miguel of Mass Communication won the 1st prize. In Radio News Reporting the winner was the group of Victoria Aznar.

The last event this day was the CAS Stylista ’09. It is an activity for the enhancement of the students’ creativity and resourcefulness. The challenges were “from scrap to riches” innovation which the students used the garbage bag as elegant dress, bandage as two piece, black garbage bag as “jumper-short” , and plastic cover as butterfly costume, model make-over, innovation white shirt challenge, and modeling. These are the winners: Model of the night was from Biological Department, Best Make-over Award to Mass Communication Department, Most Innovative Creative from MAPES, Best in White Shirt Design from Mass Communication Dept., and Grand Winner of CAS STYLISTA ’09 was Jana Ali from Mass Communication Department.

I’m sad because we didn’t have any representative for today’s activity. Is it because of the low population of social work students or there is a lack of individual mobilization. What about the support from the social work mentors? Or perhaps there’s a need for a seminar concerning self-awareness and skills/talent enhancement for social work students. Lastly, maybe the information of that matter was not disseminated properly.

Rachel O'grady, Social Work MMO

the secret to passing the SW licensure exam

My knees are trembling, my hands shaking… I’m trying to catch up my breath as my heart was beating 100 times faster than it did before. It’s past ten and I still can’t stop myself from getting hyperactive. I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed, hoping to find my name on the list…

After graduation, my classmates and I have been very busy figuring out on how to go about with our review. I thought getting hold of our diploma was the end of our frustrating and ever painstaking years in college. Well, I was wrong. It was just the start of a whole new scary yet exciting quest.

We quite had a lot of preparations for the board exam… and what were they? Mind conditioning was first on our agenda- telling ourselves that we’ll make it on the topnotchers’ list hehehe… Aside from that, we need to restrain from eating pork and anything that makes us feel bloated and dopey after eating. Reading the orange book and a few handouts more than just four hours was necessary. It’s very essential to refresh one’s mind on the Social Work theories, policies, principles, methods and everything that Ms. Thelma lee Mendoza et al, wrote on her bulky-thick informative books. Understanding what was written was the key to success since choices given on the exam were a little bit confusing and mind boggling. One has to choose among all the best answers.

The first day was dreadfully scary. We had to get up early and manage to conquer our fears and calm ourselves down. You can see those blank faced-slashed-poker-faced examinees in the hallway. I had this feeling of suffocation and “absence of air” thing. But with just a smile from the proctors, whew!! Breathing was back to normal. To top it all, the support of our teachers who were so kind enough to offer us some free yummy lunch, motivated us to answer as perfectly as we could. Eating chocolates (from a few friends) to feed our brains out was pretty effective!

What made us get through all that stuff? Just the 4 Ps: plenty of healthy munches, persistence to read, presence of mind and prayers. Going through that three-day distressful torture was one of the toughest battles we’ve faced. And passing the social work licensure exam was the exact opposite. It was one of the best things that ever happened to us. We all finally made it! Our journey has just begun- the dawning of a new day…

Congratulations to the following:

Fritz Tigon, RSW

Jennifer Del Mar Cajocson, RSW

Allen Eugene Capuyan, RSW

Wencess Gay Maquilan Diano, RSW

Renelia Espinosa Derder, RSW

Mariane Gequilan Dayon, RSW

Ninia Casas Corpin, RSW

P. S.

To future graduates, I bet you all could make it too!! You just have to be committed to excel and believe that you can… Who knows? One of you might be on the topnotchers’ list, so better start reading!
